School Philosphy

Our Lady of Mercy School combines the proven comprehensive curriculum and methods of a successful tradition with modern educational and technological advances to provide its students with a strong qualitative educational experience.  The educational program is offered in an atmosphere of positive value-oriented Catholic commitment.  Religious truths and moral values are the underlying realities from which the students' experience of learning and living achieve coherence and derive their deepest meaning.

A basic premise of the philosophy of Our Lady of Mercy School is a holistic approach to education which includes the spiritual, intellectual, physical, affective, social, moral, and aesthetic development of each child.

In striving to educate the "total child" faculty and parents challenge each student intellectually, motivate each student in the pursuit of academic excellence, and prepare each student for further educational opportunities.  We also encourage them to become responsible, productive, and contributing members of society.  Service to school, parish, and community is strongly encouraged through the practice of the Spiritual and Corporal Works of Mercy.

Guided by the Education Department of the Diocese of Rockville Centre and the State of New York, the administration and faculty continually assess and implement current educational policies and standards.  Consequently the philosophy of Our Lady of Mercy School continues to evolve and be subject to revisions when necessary.

Our Lady of Mercy School exists out of the conviction that:

  • religious commitment is the central and integrative reality of life
  • learning and living must be illumined by the light of Faith
  • human, secular and scientific knowledge derives its most profound and most significant meaning only when seen in the context of God’s providential plan of creation
  • religious truths and moral values are the underlying realities from which the student’s experiences of learning and living achieve coherence and derive its deepest meaning

Our Lady of Mercy School assumes that:

  • religion is pervasive, and that the Faith dimension is critical to all aspects of life
  • when young people come to know the Lord, they will give expression to that relationship through worship, through the Eucharist and personal prayer, and the practice of the Spiritual Works of Mercy
  • all will share knowledge, give advice to those who need it, comfort those who suffer, be patient with others, forgive those who hurt them, give correction to those who need it, and pray for others.
  • the experience of community will foster in young people a commitment to the social skills needed for rebuilding of the natural communities of our society . . . local, national, and global
  • the commitment to community will naturally express itself in service which is motivated by the fundamental commandment of Jesus Christ that we love one another and the practice of the Corporal Works of Mercy - feed the hungry, give drink to the thirsty, shelter the homeless, clothe the naked, care for the sick, help those imprisoned, bury the dead.
