Volunteer Policy

Our Lady of Mercy School’s educational programs and fund raisers benefit from the shared time and talents of its adult volunteers.  Family involvement is a proud tradition at Mercy and an absolute necessity for our continued success.  Each September at Back to School Night, parents will be made aware of the volunteer needs of the school community for the coming year.

Each family with a child enrolled at Our Lady of Mercy School is required to contribute service hours to the school.  Parents of full- time students (Pre-K-8) or their representatives are required to contribute 30 hours per school year.  Families with a single child enrolled in Nursery or Half-Day Pre-K, with no other enrolled siblings, are required to contribute 15 hours per school year. Hours must be completed and submitted between July 1st and May 31st. (Administration will work with families committed to June events.)  Families will be billed $20/hour for hours not served.  Students with families owing hours or unpaid balances will not be allowed to participate in end of the year events (including field trips, picnics, and graduations etc.,) and will not receive final report cards.  Families may donate up to 10 hours of their accumulated hours; recipients may not be credited with more than 10 donated hours during a school year.

Volunteers are responsible for registering their hours with an event chair, or with administration. In addition to Our Lady of Mercy School sponsored events/activities, families may also claim hours served through their association with CYO, Boy/Girl Scouts, Our Lady of Mercy Religious Education, or the Our Lady of Mercy Summer Fair.  Combined service for these activities cannot exceed 15 hours for families of full - time students, and 7.5 hours for part-time Nursery/Pre-K families as defined above.  Volunteer hours may be submitted any time during the school year.  An email confirmation will be sent following reception of a volunteer paper.

All volunteers must be Virtus trained.  The Diocese of Rockville Centre requires that all employees and volunteers that serve parishes, schools, or related ministries attend a Virtus-Protecting God's Children awareness session prior to being employed or volunteering.  Session registration information can be found at
