Curriculum

Core Academic Program

Religion

The Religious Education Program provides the student with an opportunity to nurture and strengthen his/her life of faith which was begun at Baptism, so that he/she may grow in wholeness and holiness while at the same time grow in an awareness of his/her responsibility to live in the light of Gospel Values.  To this end, the students study Catholic Doctrine in an environment of faith; come to an appreciation of prayer and the sacraments, and are motivated to extend their love and concern to others. Teachers have the opportunity to lead the students to a shared experience of faith.  Evaluation is based on teacher observation, questioning and testing, value clarification exercises, group discussions, prayerful participation in worship, assigned projects, and activities.

Mathematics

In order to prepare today’s children for the tasks of tomorrow, the Mathematics Program is designed to assist the students in developing logical thinking skills and reasoning ability and to apply these to life situations. In the sequentially ordered curriculum from Pre-Kindergarten through eighth grade, numeration, probability, geometry, statistics, measurement, mathematical operations in all number systems, and computer literacy are intricately related.  Concrete and abstract experiences provide assistance to the students as they develop mathematical skills which enable them to be competent in all areas of computation and problem solving.  Evaluation is based on testing, teacher observation of performance and oral opportunities of problem solving in daily life situations.

 

Language Arts

The Language Arts Program provides the students with an opportunity to communicate effectively with others and to acquire confidence in their ability to express themselves.  It is a developmental program from Pre-Kindergarten through eighth grade which includes listening, speaking, writing, reading, thinking, media, and language skills.  These skills are integrated into every area of the curriculum.  Students are evaluated in these areas through teacher observation and testing as well as through assigned projects, and activities.

 

Social Studies

The Social Studies Program provides the students with an opportunity to explore the social, political, economic, geographic, and historic facets of the past that enable them to understand the present and prepare them for the future.  It is a developmental program from Pre-Kindergarten through eighth grade that includes the facts and thinking skills necessary to appreciate the dignity of all life. The program offers the students the opportunity to incorporate elements of justice and peace into their Christian values.  Students are evaluated through a variety of techniques including teacher observation, tests, group discussions, projects, and activities.

 

Science and Health

In our changing world of modern technology, students are offered an opportunity to grow in the knowledge of their responsibility to act interdependently with the world around them. Skills in critical thinking, discussion, logical thinking, experimentation, record keeping, manipulation of scientific materials, research, and observation will enable the student to achieve this goal in his/her life.  Students are evaluated through teacher observation, testing, designed research, projects, and experiments.

 

 

Additional Subject Areas

Computer and Technology

The Computer and Technology Programs provide the students with the awareness of the role of computer technology in today’s society and its impact on his/her life.  The students acquire confidence in expressing themselves through the computer and acquire confidence in computer literacy.  It is a developmental program from Kindergarten through eighth grade which includes the facts and skills necessary to operate and understand the workings of a computer. Students and faculty make use of our high-speed connection to access the Internet for skill development, enrichment, and research.  Students are evaluated through teacher observation of their ability to navigate the computer and to follow directions, and also through homework, tests, and projects.

 

Art

The Art Education Program provides the students with an opportunity to communicate effectively with others and to acquire confidence in expressing themselves creatively.  It is a developmental program from first through eighth grade that includes listening, thinking, art appreciation, and various other media. Lessons and projects are integrated into many areas of the curriculum.  Students are evaluated by teacher observation of their ability to follow directions and their creativity in completing assigned projects, and activities.

 

Physical Education

The Physical Education Program provides the students with an opportunity to communicate effectively with others and to acquire confidence through listening and performing skills as well as good sportsmanship through physical activity with girls and boys at their own age level.  It is a developmental program from Pre-K through eighth grade which includes listening, thinking, communication, performance, and good sportsmanship through organized and supervised activities.  Students are evaluated in these areas by teacher observation, student performance, participation, effort and sportsmanship.

 

Music

The Music Education Program offers students in Pre-K through sixth grade an opportunity to enjoy singing songs of various styles and subjects.  It encourages them to actively participate and understand the fundamentals of music, to experience the talents of various musical composers and to appreciate the beautiful art of music.  The students are introduced to the various elements of music: rhythm, melody, harmony, form, expression, and style.  Students are evaluated through teacher observation, participation, tests, and research projects.

 

Foreign Language

The Foreign Language Program in grades six through eight provides students with the necessary skills to communicate in a second language which increases their opportunities to interact with other people and to understand their cultures.  In this developmental program students are offered the opportunity to study a second language in order to prepare themselves for an informed and productive role in tomorrow’s world community.  Students are evaluated through teacher observation, oral competence, reading comprehension, auditory comprehension, tests, and projects.

 

Library

The Library Media Program provides students in Pre-K through eighth grade with the opportunity to experience and appreciate the world of reading, both for pleasure and information.  The library also works in conjunction with the classroom teachers to enhance the student’s research skills by providing them with techniques to use when gathering information from varied sources. Students will be familiar with all literary genres, be able to access books through the use of our automated library, gather information using multimedia resources, and write proper citations for sources used in a research report.  Students are evaluated through teacher observation, assigned research projects and reading activities.

 

Testing Program

 

Standardized testing which measures achievement and ability are administered annually.  Students in grades two through seven take the Iowa Test of Basic Skills (ITBS). Students in grades one, four and seven take the Cognitive Abilities Test.

 

New York State Testing is administered to students in the following grades:

  • Grade 4 - English Language Arts, Science (performance and written) and Mathematics
  • Grade 6 - English Language Arts, Mathematics
  • Grade 8 - English Language Arts, Science (performance and written), Mathematics and Social Studies  

 

Homework

Homework is assigned to strengthen and reinforce skills developed in the school program.  It is also a process that can encourage self-discipline and the ability to work independently. Homework will vary with each grade level, subject area, individual class teacher and student.  Parents are encouraged to offer support and guidance to their children in completing homework assignments.
